OUR STORY

Laura Bateman
I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2012. Hearing the news made me feel both confused and terrified. In all honesty, the prospect of raising my two beautiful girls while battling this horrible illness nearly broke me. After a few years of ‘more bad days than good’, and constantly feeling low, I made the decision to undergo a stem cell transplant in Singapore, in the hope of halting the disease progression. If you would like to learn more about HSCT and my journey then check out my blog at www.lauras-journey.com

It is strange the way things work sometimes… During my time in Singapore, Flotation Therapy was recommended to me by an amazing person as the perfect way to prepare and recover from the rigmaroles of chemotherapy. I took on her advise and I have never looked back. Right from our first float, Tim and I couldn’t stop thinking and talking about it. It is very much a part of who I am now.

My own struggles have enabled me to experience first hand what flotation therapy can do and on returning to NZ, I really wanted to share this amazing tool with others. The people of Christchurch have suffered massively since the earthquakes and stress seems to be at an all time high. I’ll never claim that the float pod is the “be all and end all”, but as a tool to help navigate our battles, it’s the best I’ve found. From mums and dads, to professionals, business people and athletes, I truly feel that floatation therapy can benefit us all.

I am 3 years post transplant now and I am yet to have relapsed. I’m back running, I’m active in my daughters lives, and although I still have bads days like everybody else, there are ‘way less bad days than good!’

My husband Tim has been a professional rugby player for 12 years now (and is still battling away with the Crusaders!) He has also captained the Maori All Blacks. Tim has now floated in 5 different countries and where his reasons to float were once ‘recovery’ and ‘visualisation’, it is now for the ‘creativity’, ‘clarity’ and ‘calm’ that he takes with him into his day.

I’ll never claim to know it all (in fact I’m far from it) but I think that together we make a pretty good team!
